Overview
Comparing qualities is a basic communicative need, and Ukrainian provides two degrees of comparison at the CEFR A2 level: comparative (вищий ступінь) and superlative (найвищий ступінь). Ukrainian has both synthetic forms (single-word, using suffixes) and analytic forms (multi-word, using більш/менш and най-), giving speakers flexibility in expression.
The comparative is formed by adding -іший or -ший to the adjective stem, while the superlative adds the prefix най- to the comparative form. Several high-frequency adjectives have irregular comparative forms that must be memorized.
Comparison structures use "за" + accusative or "ніж" to express "than," differing from English's single "than" construction.
How It Works
Synthetic Comparative (-іший / -ший)
| Adjective | Comparative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| великий | більший | bigger |
| малий | менший | smaller |
| старий | старший | older |
| молодий | молодший | younger |
| довгий | довший | longer |
| красивий | красивіший | more beautiful |
Superlative (най- + comparative)
| Comparative | Superlative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| більший | найбільший | biggest |
| кращий | найкращий | best |
| менший | найменший | smallest |
| старший | найстарший | oldest |
Analytic Forms (більш / менш / найбільш)
Used for longer adjectives: більш цікавий (more interesting), найбільш відомий (most famous).
Irregular Comparatives
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| добрий (good) | кращий | найкращий |
| поганий (bad) | гірший | найгірший |
| великий (big) | більший | найбільший |
| малий (small) | менший | найменший |
Comparison Structures
- за + accusative: Вона старша за мене. (She is older than me.)
- ніж: Він вищий, ніж я. (He is taller than I.)
Examples in Context

| Це найгірший день. | This is the worst day. | Irregular superlative |
| менш важливий | less important | Analytic negative |

Common Mistakes
Using більш with short adjectives
- Wrong: більш великий
- Right: більший
- Why: Common short adjectives use synthetic comparative. Більш is for longer, bookish adjectives.
Forgetting irregular forms
- Wrong: добріший
- Right: кращий
- Why: Добрий has an irregular comparative that must be memorized.
Wrong comparison structure
- Wrong: Він більший ніж мене.
- Right: Він більший за мене. or Він більший, ніж я.
- Why: After за, use accusative; after ніж, use nominative.
Usage Notes
Synthetic forms are preferred in everyday speech for common adjectives. Analytic forms (більш + adjective) are more common in formal and academic writing. The superlative prefix най- is always synthetic: найкращий, найбільший.
For emphasis, Ukrainian allows prefixing the superlative with "якнай-" or "щонай-": якнайшвидше (as quickly as possible), щонайкращий (the very best).
Practice Tips
Irregular form drill: Memorize the five most common irregular comparatives (кращий, гірший, більший, менший, старший).
Comparison sentences: Compare objects, people, and places using both за and ніж structures.
Superlative descriptions: Describe your favorites using superlatives: найкраща книга, найбільше місто.
