Overview

Verbs of motion form a special subsystem within Ukrainian verbs, adding a second layer of distinction beyond perfective/imperfective: determinate (one direction, in progress) vs indeterminate (habitual, multi-directional, round trip). At the CEFR B1 level, understanding this system is necessary for accurately describing movement.

Each motion verb exists as a pair: determinate for specific, ongoing movement in one direction, and indeterminate for habitual or non-directional movement. For example, іти (going now, on foot, one direction) vs ходити (going regularly, walking around). Both are imperfective; perfective forms are created by adding prefixes.

This system is shared across Slavic languages but is particularly important in Ukrainian due to the language's rich prefix system, which combines with motion verbs to create dozens of derived verbs with nuanced meanings.

How It Works

Core Motion Verb Pairs

Determinate (one-way) Indeterminate (habitual) Meaning
іти ходити go on foot
їхати їздити go by vehicle
бігти бігати run
летіти літати fly
нести носити carry (on foot)
везти возити carry (by vehicle)
вести водити lead
плисти плавати swim / sail

When to Use Each

Determinate (іти, їхати, etc.):

  • Currently in progress: Іду до школи. (I'm going to school right now.)
  • Single trip, one direction

Indeterminate (ходити, їздити, etc.):

  • Habitual: Ходжу до школи щодня. (I go to school every day.)
  • Round trip: Учора ходив до лікаря. (Yesterday I went to the doctor and came back.)
  • General ability: Дитина вже ходить. (The child already walks.)

Examples in Context

Common Mistakes

Using determinate for habitual actions

  • Wrong: Щодня іду до школи. (determinate for habitual)
  • Right: Щодня ходжу до школи.
  • Why: Habitual, repeated motion requires the indeterminate verb.

Confusing іти (foot) and їхати (vehicle)

  • Wrong: Я іду до Львова. (on foot to another city)
  • Right: Я їду до Львова.
  • Why: Long-distance travel implies a vehicle: їхати, not іти.

Using past indeterminate for one-way past trip

  • Wrong: Учора ходив до Львова. (implies round trip completed)
  • Right: Учора їхав до Львова. (was traveling, one direction) or Учора поїхав до Львова. (perfective, departed)
  • Why: Past indeterminate implies a completed round trip.

Usage Notes

Motion verbs become even more powerful with prefixes (при-, ви-, за-, пере-, etc.), which is covered in the Verbal Prefixes concept at C1. Even at B1, you will encounter common prefixed forms: прийти (to arrive), піти (to leave), поїхати (to depart).

The round-trip meaning of past indeterminate is particularly useful: "Ходив до магазину" (I went to the store and came back). This single word encodes what English needs a whole phrase for.

Practice Tips

  1. Now vs usually: For each motion verb pair, practice "right now" (determinate) vs "usually" (indeterminate) sentences.

  2. Transport matching: Match the correct motion verb to the mode of transport: on foot = іти/ходити, by car = їхати/їздити, by plane = летіти/літати.

  3. Past trip narration: Describe yesterday's movements using the round-trip indeterminate pattern.
