Overview
Correlative structures are paired conjunctions that link two clauses with a "this...that" relationship. At the CEFR B1 level, these structures extend the relative clause system to express temporal, manner, and quantitative correlations.
The key pairs are: جب...تب (when...then), جیسے/جیسا...ویسے/ویسا (as...so), جتنا...اتنا (as much...that much), and جہاں...وہاں (where...there). These are fundamental to expressing proportional relationships, comparisons, and conditional-like patterns.
How It Works
Correlative Pairs
| Relative | Correlative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| جب jab | تب tab / تو to | when...then |
| جیسا jaisā | ویسا vaisā | as/like...so |
| جتنا jitnā | اتنا utnā | as much...that much |
| جہاں jahāṅ | وہاں vahāṅ | where...there |
| جدھر jidhar | ادھر udhar | whichever way...that way |
| جس طرح | اس طرح | in the way...in that way |
Agreement in Correlatives
جیسا, جتنا and their correlatives agree like adjectives:

Common Mistakes
Forgetting the Correlative Partner
- Wrong: جب وہ آئے ہم جائیں گے۔
- Right: جب وہ آئے تب ہم جائیں گے۔
- Why: The correlative partner (تب, ویسا, اتنا) completes the paired structure.
Not Agreeing جتنا/اتنا with Nouns
- Wrong: جتنا محنت اتنا فائدہ
- Right: جتنی محنت اتنا فائدہ (محنت is feminine)
- Why: These correlatives agree in gender like adjectives.
Usage Notes
Correlatives are a defining feature of South Asian syntax and produce elegant, balanced sentences. Many proverbs use correlative structure: جیسا کرو گے ویسا بھرو گے (as you sow, so shall you reap).
Practice Tips
- Learn each pair as a unit and practice with simple examples.
- Create proportional sentences: the more X, the more Y.
