Location Words in Chinese

方位词

This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

Location words (方位词, fāngwèicí) express spatial relationships in Chinese: on, under, in, out, front, back, left, right. They typically attach to a noun to create a location phrase: 桌子上 (on the table), 房间里 (in the room). These words are essential for describing where things are and giving directions.

At the CEFR A1 level, location words are needed for everyday situations like saying where you are, describing where objects are placed, and understanding basic directions. Chinese location words follow the noun they modify (桌子 + 上 = on the table), which is the opposite of English prepositions that precede the noun.

Location words can appear in their simple one-character form (上, 下, 里) or in an expanded two-character form (上面, 下面, 里面). The expanded forms are more common in spoken Chinese and can stand alone as subjects or objects.

Common Mistakes

Putting location words before the noun

  • Wrong: 上桌子 (on table -- English order)
  • Right: 桌子上 (table on)
  • Why: Chinese location words follow the noun, unlike English prepositions that precede it.

Using 在 without a location word

  • Wrong: 书在桌子。(Book at table.)
  • Right: 书在桌子上。(Book is on the table.)
  • Why: When using 在 + noun for location, a location word (上, 里, etc.) is usually needed to specify the spatial relationship.

Confusing 里 and 中

  • Wrong: Using 中 for physical containment
  • Right: 房间里 (in the room), not 房间中 in everyday speech
  • Why: 里 is more common in spoken Chinese for physical locations; 中 is used more in abstract contexts (其中, among them) or formal writing.

Practice Tips

  • Describe the positions of objects around you: 手机在桌子上, 书在包里, 猫在椅子下面. This builds spatial vocabulary naturally.
  • Learn location words in pairs of opposites: 上/下, 前/后, 里/外, 左/右. This makes them easier to remember and use.
  • Practice giving simple directions using location words: 在前面, 在左边, 在旁边.
