Adjective Agreement in Arabic

Overview
In Arabic, adjectives follow the noun they describe and must agree with it in four ways: gender, number, definiteness, and case. This agreement system is more extensive than in English, where adjectives are invariable. Understanding adjective agreement is a fundamental skill at the A1 level because adjectives appear in almost every description you will make.
The basic pattern is straightforward: a masculine noun takes a masculine adjective, a feminine noun takes a feminine adjective (usually by adding ة), a definite noun takes a definite adjective (with ال), and an indefinite noun takes an indefinite adjective (with tanwin).
When both noun and adjective carry ال, you have a descriptive phrase ("the big house"). When neither has ال, you also have a phrase ("a big house"). But if the noun has ال and the adjective does not, you actually have a complete sentence ("the house is big").
How It Works
Gender Agreement
| Noun Gender | Adjective Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | Base form | كتاب جديد (a new book) |
| Feminine | Add ة | مدرسة جديدة (a new school) |
Definiteness Agreement
| Noun | Adjective | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Indefinite: كتاب | Indefinite: جديد | كتاب جديد (a new book -- phrase) |
| Definite: الكتاب | Definite: الجديد | الكتاب الجديد (the new book -- phrase) |
| Definite: الكتاب | Indefinite: جديد | الكتاب جديد (the book is new -- sentence!) |
Number Agreement (Human vs. Non-Human)
| Noun Type | Plural Adjective Rule |
|---|---|
| Human plural | Adjective matches: معلمون جدد (new male teachers) |
| Non-human plural | Adjective is feminine singular: كتب جديدة (new books) |
Examples in Context
| Arabic | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| كتاب جديد | a new book | Both indefinite, masculine |
| الكتاب الجديد | the new book | Both definite, masculine |
| طالبة ذكية | a smart female student | Feminine agreement |
| البيت الكبير | the big house | Both definite |
| سيارة حمراء | a red car | Feminine of أحمر is حمراء |
| الطلاب الجدد | the new students (male) | Human plural agreement |
| بيوت جميلة | beautiful houses | Non-human plural = feminine singular adjective |
| المدينة القديمة | the old city | Feminine definite |
| رجل طويل | a tall man | Masculine indefinite |
| الأولاد الصغار | the little children | Human plural |
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| كتاب الجديد | كتاب جديد or الكتاب الجديد | Both must match in definiteness |
| كتب جديدون | كتب جديدة | Non-human plurals take feminine singular adjective |
| مدينة كبير | مدينة كبيرة | Feminine noun requires feminine adjective |
| الجديد الكتاب | الكتاب الجديد | Adjective comes after the noun in Arabic |
Practice Tips
- When learning a new adjective, always practice it with both masculine and feminine nouns: طويل/طويلة, كبير/كبيرة, جميل/جميلة.
- Remember the critical rule for non-human plurals: they take feminine singular adjectives. This is one of the most distinctive features of Arabic grammar.
- Practice making phrases vs. sentences by toggling ال: الكتاب الجديد (the new book) vs. الكتاب جديد (the book is new).
