Purpose Clauses with Żeby in Polish

Overview

Purpose clauses express intention or purpose ("in order to," "so that"). In Polish, they use żeby (or aby in formal writing) followed by a verb in past tense form with conditional-like personal endings. At the B1 level, żeby clauses are essential for expressing goals, indirect commands, and wishes.

When the subject of both clauses is the same, żeby + infinitive is used: Przyszedł, żeby pomóc (He came to help). When the subjects differ, żeby takes personal endings and the verb takes past tense form: Powiedz mu, żeby przyszedł (Tell him to come).

The personal forms of żeby are: żebym, żebyś, żeby, żebyśmy, żebyście, żeby. These combine the conjunction with the conditional personal endings.
