Adjective Agreement in Urdu

صفت کی مطابقت

This article is part of the Urdu grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

Urdu adjectives fall into two categories: variable adjectives that change form to agree with the noun they modify, and invariable adjectives that remain the same regardless of the noun. This CEFR A1 concept is essential because variable adjectives must match their noun in gender, number, and case.

Variable adjectives are those ending in -ā in their masculine singular direct form (like اچھا acchā, "good" and بڑا baṛā, "big"). These change to -ī for feminine, -e for masculine plural and masculine oblique. Invariable adjectives (like لال lāl, "red" and صاف sāf, "clean") never change form.

This agreement system ensures that every element in a noun phrase — adjective, noun, and verb — harmonizes in gender and number, giving Urdu its characteristic grammatical cohesion.

How It Works

Variable Adjective Forms

Form Ending Example with اچھا
Masculine singular direct اچھا لڑکا acchā laṛkā (good boy)
Feminine (all) اچھی لڑکی acchī laṛkī (good girl)
Masculine plural direct -e اچھے لڑکے acche laṛke (good boys)
Masculine singular oblique -e اچھے لڑکے کو acche laṛke ko (to the good boy)
Masculine plural oblique -e اچھے لڑکوں کو acche laṛkoṅ ko (to the good boys)
Feminine plural اچھی لڑکیاں acchī laṛkiyāṅ (good girls)

Common Variable Adjectives

Common Mistakes

Changing Invariable Adjectives

  • Wrong: لالی کتاب (trying to make لال feminine)
  • Right: لال کتاب
  • Why: Adjectives not ending in -ā never change form. Only the -ā/-ī/-e pattern applies.

Forgetting Oblique Agreement

  • Wrong: بڑا لڑکے کو
  • Right: بڑے لڑکے کو
  • Why: When the noun goes into oblique case (before a postposition), the adjective must also change to its oblique form (-e for masculine).

Using Masculine Form with Feminine Nouns

  • Wrong: اچھا کتاب
  • Right: اچھی کتاب
  • Why: The adjective must match the noun's gender: کتاب is feminine, so اچھا becomes اچھی.

Assuming Predicate Adjectives Don't Agree

  • Wrong: لڑکی اچھا ہے۔
  • Right: لڑکی اچھی ہے۔
  • Why: Adjectives agree with their noun whether placed before (attributive) or after (predicate) the noun.

Usage Notes

In Urdu, adjectives typically come before the noun they modify, just as in English. However, they can also appear in predicate position after the verb ہونا. In both positions, agreement rules apply identically.

Many Urdu adjectives borrowed from Arabic and Persian are invariable (خوبصورت, مشہور, عظیم). As a general rule, if an adjective does not end in -ā in its base form, it is invariable.

Practice Tips

  • Sort new adjectives into two lists: variable (-ā ending) and invariable (everything else). This makes agreement automatic.
  • Practice with noun phrases in all forms: masculine singular, feminine, masculine plural, and oblique, using one adjective at a time.
  • Create sentences that combine adjective agreement with verb agreement to reinforce the full pattern.
