Basic Adverbs in Urdu

Overview

Adverbs in Urdu modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, providing information about manner, degree, frequency, and time. At the CEFR A1 level, learning common adverbs dramatically improves the expressiveness of even simple sentences.

Unlike adjectives, most Urdu adverbs do not change form for gender or number — they are invariable. This makes them relatively straightforward to use.

Common Mistakes

Placing Adverbs After the Verb

• Wrong: وہ آتا ہے ہمیشہ۔
• Right: وہ ہمیشہ آتا ہے۔
• Why: Adverbs typically come before the verb or verb phrase in Urdu.

Confusing بہت (Very) with زیادہ (More/Too Much)

• Wrong: Using them interchangeably
• Right: بہت = very (degree); زیادہ = more/excessive (comparative or excess)
• Why: بہت modifies a single quality; زیادہ implies comparison or excess.

Usage Notes

بہت is the most common intensifier in Urdu — بہت اچھا (very good), بہت شکریہ (many thanks), بہت خوب (excellent). It is invariable and works with any adjective or adverb.
